The Patriot

By Robert Browning

It was roses, roses, all the way,
With myrtle mixed in my path like mad:
The house-roofs seemed to heave and sway,
The church-spires flamed, such flags they had,
A year ago on this very day.

The air broke into a mist with bells,
The old walls rocked with the crowd and cries.
Had I said, “Good folk, mere noise repels—
But give me your sun from yonder skies!”
They had answered, “And afterward, what else?”

Alack, it was I who leaped at the sun
To give it my loving friends to keep!
Nought man could do, have I left undone:
And you see my harvest, what I reap
This very day, now a year is run.

There’s nobody on the house-tops now—
Just a palsied few at the windows set;
For the best of the sight is, all allow,
At the Shambles’ Gate—or, better yet,
By the very scaffold’s foot, I trow.

I go in the rain, and, more than needs,
A rope cuts both my wrists behind;
And I think, by the feel, my forehead bleeds,
For they fling, whoever has a mind,
Stones at me for my year’s misdeeds.

Thus I entered, and thus I go!
In triumphs, people have dropped down dead.
“Paid by the world, what dost thou owe
“Me?”—God might question; now instead,
‘Tis God shall repay: I am safer so.

🔰 Summary :
The poem is a dramatic monologue in which the poet tells the story of a patriot and makes a series of comments on the past and present moments of his life. In the poem the patriot describes how he began and ended his political career. People received him warmly a year ago. His paths were decorated with roses and myrtles. There were sounds of bells resounding in the air. People had flocked together to see the great leader who performed great deeds for his nation. People circled him such a way that the sunlight could not touch him. But after one year everything he did for the people was considered criminal acts. As a result, he has now to go to the scaffold like a common criminal. His wrists are bound together behind his back with a rope and people are throwing stones at him. Once the patriot had his moment of glory but now he is going to embrace death in disgrace. His only consolation is that God will certainly reward him for his good deeds.

🔰 Symbols used in the poem :
M. H. Abrams says in his ‘A Glossary Of Literary Terms’: In the broadest sense a symbol is anything which signifies something; in this sense all words are symbols. In discussing literature, however, the term ‘symbols’ is applied only to a word or phrase that signifies an object or event itself. There are many symbols found in the poem. They play a vital role to make the poem more meaningful. The symbols of the poem are given below:

Rose: Rose is the symbol of love. In this poem it acts as a

symbol of honour and love. Path: Path is a symbol of the way of life. In broader sense, it is the route of career. Here it denotes the political career of the patriot.

Sun: Sun is the symbol of power and dominance. It asserts the uncontrollable power. Here the patriot tried to control the uncontrolled.

Palsied: It is disease. In old belief, who are cursed got palsied. This symbolises the disease of the Victorian people.

Rain: Rain is the blessing of the nature. It comes when it is necessary. Here rain came as the sky is crying watching the fate of the patriot. It came to show condolence. The poet had used some sensible symbols to portray the life of the patriot who was hanging between the trust and mistrust of the age.

🔰 Irony in the poem :
Irony is a figure of speech, which expresses the opposite meaning of the surface meaning. It is always made intentionally. There are many types of irony: situational, dramatic, verbal etc. Here in the poem we see the situational irony of the patriot. In situational irony, both the characters and the audience are fully unaware of the implications of the real situation. The patriot, who was once welcomed by, is now hated by the same people. They change their motif within a year. They even forget what they did last year with the same person. They made him patriot and by turn they made him traitor as well. So, this is an effect of the illiterate people. This is about their poor mentality. The mass people did not know why the leader was respected and even they don’t know why he is hated. They are just fragile minded. That’s why; the irony is situational. The patriot said:

“For they fling, whoever has a mind”

🔰”Thus I entered and thus i go” line Explanation

These lines of the poem reflect on the patriot’s death. It is full of philosophical and religious ideas. “Thus I entered and thus I go” – his entry and exit from life, position and people’s minds in the presence of so many others sums up the speaker’s life well.

This concluding stanza of the poem begins with the patriot declaring how he is leaving, the same way that he entered. He is walking towards his death through the same streets on which he had entered the town and was welcomed as a celebrity, a hero. Even the most important, the most loved people have lost their glamour and glory. The most triumphant have also fallen. The patriot’s religious beliefs have been reflected and his belief in afterlife has been showcased when he mentions how he will be received by God. If god might ask him, now, that he has been paid for his deeds by the world, what more does he owe to god. The patriot’s reply to this has shades of faith and optimism. He replies saying that his real repayment will be done by God. He is placing his trust in God as he knows that he has committed no moral wrongs and the almighty is always just and fair. Hence, he is safe with god as he wont have to face anymore undeserving punishments and will be truly and justly rewarded for his acts or deeds.”
