Neoclassical Age As the Age of Prose of Reason
The Neoclassical Age, often referred to as the Age of Reason or the Enlightenment, spanned from the late 17th to the late 18th century. It was characterized by a profound intellectual shift marked by a renewed interest in classical ideals, reason, and a departure from the excesses of the preceding Baroque and Restoration periods. In literature, this era manifested as the Age of Prose of Reason, where prose became a dominant form of expression to communicate rational thought and moral instruction.
1. Emphasis on Reason and Rationalism:
The Neoclassical thinkers of this age championed the supremacy of reason and rational inquiry. This emphasis on reason was a reaction against the perceived irrationality and excesses of earlier periods. Writers believed in the capacity of the human mind to understand, analyze, and improve both society and the individual.

2. Prose as a Medium of Enlightenment:
Prose emerged as the primary vehicle for conveying Enlightenment ideals. Essay writing, in particular, became a popular form through which writers could explore and disseminate new ideas. The periodical essay, a concise and often witty form of prose, was employed to engage a broad readership in discussions about morality, politics, and society.

3. The Rise of Periodical Essays:
The Neoclassical Age witnessed the proliferation of periodicals, such as “The Tatler” and “The Spectator,” edited by Joseph Addison and Sir Richard Steele. These publications featured essays that addressed a range of topics, including manners, morals, and literature. The periodical essay became a powerful tool for moral and social instruction.
4. Literary Criticism and Standards:
Neoclassical thinkers, such as Samuel Johnson, contributed significantly to the development of literary criticism. Johnson’s “Preface to Shakespeare” established a set of critical standards, emphasizing clarity, decorum, and adherence to classical principles in literature. His work laid the foundation for the neoclassical approach to evaluating and creating literature.

5. Satire as a Moral Tool:
Satire became a popular form of prose during this age. Writers like Jonathan Swift used satire to criticize the follies and vices of society. Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” for example, satirically addresses the economic and social issues of his time, highlighting the power of prose to engage readers in critical reflection.
6. Moral Instruction and Didacticism:
Neoclassical prose often had a didactic purpose. Writers sought to instruct and educate their readers on matters of ethics, conduct, and virtue. Moral instruction was woven into prose works to guide readers toward a more enlightened and virtuous life.
7. Development of the Novel:
While the Neoclassical Age is primarily associated with prose of reason in the form of essays and criticism, the period also witnessed the early development of the novel. Although the novel would fully blossom in the subsequent Romantic period, writers like Daniel Defoe with “Robinson Crusoe” and Samuel Richardson with “Pamela” laid the groundwork for the novelistic form.
8. Encyclopedias and the Dissemination of Knowledge:
The Neoclassical Age saw the publication of comprehensive encyclopedias, such as Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d’Alembert’s “Encyclopédie” in France. These works aimed to compile and disseminate knowledge, reflecting the Enlightenment belief in the power of education and the importance of spreading rational thought.
Legacy:
The Neoclassical Age’s emphasis on reason, clarity, and moral instruction has left a lasting legacy. Its influence can be traced in subsequent literary movements, particularly in the continued development of the novel, the enduring popularity of the essay form, and the ongoing importance of reason in intellectual discourse. The Age of Prose of Reason paved the way for the Enlightenment’s impact on literature, philosophy, and the shaping of modern thought.
